The Amitabha Buddhist Library in Chicago was actively involved in the distribution and circulation
of Dharma teaching materials even before its opening in May 2003. Since December 2002, the library,
acting on behalf of the Pure Land Learning College in Australia, has assisted the Corporate Body
of Buddha Education Foundation in Taiwan and the Hwa-Dzan Pure Land Association in Taiwan
in the donation of Dharma materials.
These donations have included more than one hundred sets of the Qianlong Great Buddhist Canon, and a vast number of Dharma books and materials in Chinese, English, Pali, Burmese, and other languages. Recipients have included research institutes, national libraries, and university libraries in many countries. In addition to spreading the Buddha°¶s teaching, the donation is helping to foster communication and understanding among people of different cultures.
In the United States, recipients include the Library of Congress; Harvard University; Stanford University;
MIT; Cornell University; Columbia University; the University of Pennsylvania; Princeton University;
the University of Wisconsin, Madison; the University of North Carolina; the University of California,
Berkeley; John Hopkins University; New York University; the University of Chicago; and the University
of Illinois, Champaign; and many others.
In England, recipients include the University of London University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford. Recipients also include the Royal Library of Denmark; the National Library of Estonia; the Jewish National and University Library, Israel; and libraries in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and many other countries.
In Asia, recipients include National Taiwan University, Taiwan; Peking University, China; Zhejiang University; Sichuan University; and many other universities and research institutes in China. Many research institutes in Nepal, India, and Singapore have also accepted the donation of the Qianlong Great Buddhist Canon and other Dharma teaching materials. The National Library of China also accepted the Qianlong Great Buddhist Canon in June 2005 through the assistance provided by our library volunteers. In other areas of the world, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and the Australia National University also received the donations.
The donation work continues. We welcome any universities or research institutes that are interested in acquiring the Qianlong Great Buddhist Canon to apply for the materials through the library.
